Francois de Bie, president of the European Bioplastics Association, said the global bioplastics market is expected to grow by 20% in the next five years. As the world economy transitions to a low-carbon and circular economy, along with increased policy support for the bioeconomy, increasing consumer awareness of sustainable products and packaging will continue to drive demand for bioplastics.

The European Bioplastics Association (European Bioplastics) said on November 29 that the global annual production capacity of bioplastics will increase from 2.05 million tons in 2017 to 2.44 million tons in 2022. Among them, polylactic acid (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) are the main drivers for the growth of bioplastics.

About 56 percent of global bioplastic production capacity in 2017 was bio-based, non-biodegradable plastics, including bio-based polyethylene, bio-based polyethylene terephthalate and bio-based polyamides, the association said. The packaging industry is still the largest application field of bioplastics, accounting for nearly 60% of the market demand in 2017. Asia is a major production hub for bioplastics, currently accounting for more than 50% of the market. Europe accounts for 20% of production, but this will rise to 25% by 2022.

“We are witnessing an increasing number of brands switching from fossil feedstock materials to bio-based materials, or providing biodegradable solutions for their products, to meet the growing consumer demand for more sustainable products, as well as to adapt to the consumption process. A change in perception of environmental impact.” Francois de Bie said, “The bioplastics industry is able to meet the growing demands of society, as many innovative companies have invested heavily in research and development, focusing on developing bio-based products with a circular economy in mind.”
